THE AUSTRALIAN WRITER reviews Words to Inspire Writers

I have just received my copy of THE AUSTRALIAN WRITER Issue #360 (June 2008-August 2008 ) and am delighted to see a wonderful review of my book, Words to Inspire Writers, on p.15. Here is what it has to say (reproduced with the permission of Editor Daan Spijer):

This is indeed an inspiring book for writers. From time to time we sit and stare into space and the wise or goading words of writers past and present may help you to pick up the quill and dip it into the ink pot again.

I, for one, will keep this book within easy reach. After all, if I’m going to be distracted, it may as well be by the wisdom of others.

The book is designed as a perpetual calendar, with three quotes for every day of the year: one each for the stages of preparation, creation and celebration. You can also open it at random for pot luck or prepare yourself for erudition at parties.

One thing you can learn from this collection, is that some of the most famous and revered writers have had their periods of stuckness. As Epictetus wrote almost 1900 years ago: If you want to be a writer, write! (April 14).

We may embrace the hubris of Charles Lamb and declaim: Damn the age. I’ll write for antiquity. (August 19), or the humility of Mark Twain: A successful book is not made of what is in it, but what is left out of it. (March 23).

It is possible, of course, to find writers’ quotes for oneself on the internet, but it is so much easier to benefit from the obvious hard work and thought that Greg Babic has put into this collection and his organisation of the material. It seems that Greg agrees with GB Shaw: Some people see things as they are and ask “Why?”. I dream of things that aren’t and ask “Why not?” He has asked and answered that second question.

Many of us have experienced that writing can be a lonely way of life. We trawl our experiences and our unconscious for inspiration. Some of us allow family, friends and editors to make the process less lonely. For those who still feel isolated, dip into this book daily.

Author Interview Posted

I have some more very exciting news that I wanted to share with you: my first-ever Author Interview has just been posted at http://joyceanthony.tripod.com/blog/.
I feel very proud that Miss Anthony (http://joyceanthony.tripod.com/) wanted to interview me for her Books and Authors website, and hope you will take the time to read the posted interview (you might learn some surprising things about me that you did not know!). You’ll also see that I have a special gift (listed at the end of the interview) that is available exclusively to those who make the effort to check out Joyce’s site.
Otherwise, I hope you have found the time to download, read, and then review the short excerpt from my Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award Semi-Finalist, “The Profile”, found here http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0011G9XZ0. Your vote, and also the effort you make in helping me spread the word about this Semi-Final placing, could well see me make it into the Finals! Any effort you can make to tell people about this would be very much appreciated.

As always, thanks for your time.

Author Copy Received

Words to Inspire Writers Book ImageWhether it is the first, second, or – as in this case – the third book you have written, there is very little that comes close (for a writer) to the joy that is felt upon receipt of one’s first Author Copy of a new book. The anticipation that accompanies the simple act of ripping open the packaging is something that cannot really be described to a non-writer. To any writer who holds a wish to be one day published, however, it is a joy fondly anticipated each and every time you sit at your keyboard. A book represents the physical manifestation of a dream – it is the words you wrote, but edited, printed, bound, and ready to be shared with others. It is a commodity that represents your talent, made real. You pick it up and caress the cover, feeling the physical form of the book, and then you flick through the pages, the newly printed smell a tonic to all doubts and insecurities you might have felt previously. This is something you made, you tell yourself. From conception to completion, every word came from your mind. Even a compilation (such as this third book of mine, Words to Inspire Writers: A perpetual Calendar of classic Writing-related Quotations – on Writers, Writing, Words, Books, Literature, and Publishing – specifically selected to illustrate the Writing Process and to motivate Authors every day), requires the collection, selection, and, ultimately, presentation of materials that you chose. Your mind made decisions – about your book – that your fingers translated (via the computer) into a coherent whole: a brand new book. I truly hope that all unpublished writers (that is, traditionally unpublished, as in printed book form) reading this one day experience the pleasure of holding in their hands a book that they have written – for it is a truly incomparable feeling. Of course, there are many other ways to be published today (this blog entry being one such), so I am not denigrating those who might not have yet published a physical book; I am just hoping that, one day, you too might know the pleasure I experienced yesterday when the parcel from my publisher arrived on my doorstep (which, I must point out, was tinged with sadness also – being, as it was, exactly eleven years, to the day, since my Dad, Frank Henry Babic, had died, on December 31, 1996 – but Mum reckons Dad probably organized it that way!).

Anyway, I am very proud to be able to share this with you all. Hopefully, over the months (and years) ahead, I will be able to share much more; about my journey as a writer, friend, and human being. If you have the time, please do download your FREE copy of the Words to Inspire Writers Ebook Sampler pdf file here. Then let me know what you think. Nothing would delight me more!

Otherwise, keep writing – and have a Healthy, Prosperous, and Happy New Year!
